Plankton Pre-lab

In this segment, our class is studying the species of plankton. The name "plankton" comes from the greek term "wanderer". In our studying we are try to see how diverse the species of plankton in South Maui.

Question

How diverse are the plankton species of south maui

Hypothesis

 I think there would be around 5 to 10 different species of

plankton.

Materials

troll line, Plankton net, line, microscope, collection jars, journal.

Procedure 

Gathering plankton

• Gather all materials and supplys
• Leave and arrive to boat ramp 
• Get out troll line, plankton net and walk onto the boat ramp
• Un-wrap the rope from the troll line, and drop the collector into the water.
• Walk along the boat ramp to capture plankton
• Bring out the plankton net and remove the plankton collector jar from the net.
• Pour the water carefully into the main collection jar. 

 Identifying plankton 

• grab and set up the micro scope and turn it on
• remove the standard scope nozzle and put on the water proof nozzle.
•  grab the collection jar and pour the water carefully into the small examination tray or bowl. 
• slowly bend the micro scope above and into the water too view the plankton in the water sample.
• slowly adjust and move the tray to search for plankton
• once plankton is spotted, identify its species and take photos if possible.   

 Conclusion

 After all of the information and plankton that i gathered, i have come to conclude that there are more species of plankton that i thought that there were.
